Support
Meal Maker plans your week's meals, works out what the shopping will really cost, and walks you through the cooking. It's free, there's nothing to unlock, and it works offline.

Common questions
Why is the price different from what I actually paid?
The figures in the app are estimates, not live prices. They're built from typical UK pack prices, then adjusted up or down for the shop you've chosen. Real prices move constantly, vary by branch, and change with offers.
The estimate does try hard to be realistic in one important way: it prices whole packs. If a recipe needs four wraps and wraps come in packs of eight, you're charged for the pack. If two meals both use cheddar, you're charged for one block, not two β the meal card will tell you when a meal is cheaper because it shares ingredients with the rest of your week.
Tick anything you already have on the Shopping tab and it drops out of the total.
If you hold a Clubcard, Nectar or similar card, tell the app in Settings β Loyalty cards. When a loyalty price is known for an item it's used in your total. That needs the optional price service to be running; without it, estimates are used and the app says so.
How do I change which supermarket I'm shopping at?
Tap the shop name on the budget card at the top of the Plan tab, or change it in Settings under "Your plan". Prices update everywhere immediately. "Compare shops" on the same card shows what the same list would cost at each one.
Some meals never seem to come up
A recipe is only offered if it passes every filter you've set: your dietary needs, the appliances you have, and any ingredients you said you dislike. A single disliked ingredient hides every recipe containing it, so "onion" removes a lot.
Meals you've skipped are hidden too β "not this week" for seven days, or longer if you chose that. Settings shows how many are hidden and lets you bring them all back.
I'm not vegetarian, but veggie meals keep coming up
Setup asks two separate questions: what you eat (meat-eater, pescatarian, vegetarian, vegan), and β for meat-eaters only β how many veggie mains to mix in. The default is βa fewβ, about one card in five. Change it to βmeat or fish in every mainβ in Settings β What you eat, or during setup. Puddings and breakfasts aren't affected either way.
The line under the course tabs on Pick Meals always says exactly what the deck contains, so there's no guessing.
Can I tell it what kind of food I like?
Yes. Setup and Settings β Your taste let you pick kinds of food β Classic British, Fakeaway, Italian, Indian, Mexican, East & South-East Asian, Mediterranean, BBQ, comfort food, light & healthy, quick, batch cooking β and how confident a cook you are. These steer which cards come up first. They never hide a recipe outright; the Recipes tab lets you browse every one by course and style.
Where are breakfasts, lunches and puddings?
Tap the course tabs at the top of the Pick Meals screen. A course you haven't added to your week yet shows a dashed outline and a +; tapping it adds that course and deals its cards straight away.
What does the "lower carb & sugar" filter actually do?
It narrows the app to recipes we've built or judged to be lower in carbohydrate and free sugars β including puddings made with sweetener and ground almonds rather than sugar and flour.
It is a planning aid, not medical advice. The carb figures are our own estimates, portion size changes them, and sweeteners affect people differently. If you're managing diabetes, count carbs the way your GP or diabetes team has shown you.
The "invent a meal with AI" button isn't there
That feature uses Apple's on-device AI, which needs an iPhone that supports Apple Intelligence, running a recent version of iOS, with Apple Intelligence switched on in iOS Settings. On any other iPhone the button is hidden and everything else works exactly the same β the recipe library is the main event, the AI is a bonus.
If the AI declines to write a recipe, tap it again. Occasionally its safety checks stop a perfectly ordinary request, and a second attempt usually works.
Recipe photos aren't loading
Photos are fetched from the internet as you browse, so they need a connection. Without one, cards fall back to a plain coloured tile and nothing else is affected. Settings has a "Test photo connection" button that tells you whether the app can reach the photo service.
Can my family vote on the week's meals?
That's built and waiting on the free online service being switched on. When it is, you'll find Family voting in Settings: one person creates a household and shares a 6-character code, everyone proposes meals and taps π on the ones they want, and whoever created the household locks the winners into the plan. Until then the row in Settings says "coming soon".
Can I use this on two phones, or move to a new one?
Not yet. Your data lives only on your own phone, which is what keeps the app free and private, but it also means there's no sync between devices at the moment. A restored iPhone backup will bring your data across. Syncing between phones is the next thing on my list.
How do I delete my data?
Delete the app and everything goes with it β nothing is held anywhere else. Inside the app you can also start a fresh week, clear hidden meals, or redo your setup at any time from Settings.
Is any of it paid?
No. Every part of the app is free, forever, with nothing locked, no subscription, no adverts and nothing to buy. If you want to support it, tell someone about it β there's a share button in Settings.
Cooking safely
Meal Maker gives cooking suggestions, rough cost estimates and approximate nutrition information. It isn't professional dietary, medical or food safety advice.
Always check food is cooked through before eating, follow the storage and use-by guidance on the packaging, and read ingredient labels yourself if you have an allergy or intolerance. Diet tags are a convenience and can be wrong, particularly on recipes you import or the AI invents. Times in the app are a guide β judge doneness yourself.
Something wrong with a recipe?
If a recipe has a mistake in it, a cooking time that doesn't work, or a diet tag that looks incorrect, please tell me. Send the recipe name and what's wrong and I'll fix it in the next update.
